The government said more than 2,600 rescue workers from around the world have arrived in Venezuela with trained search dogs and machines.

Rescue efforts in La Guaira – the worst-hit area – appeared noticeably more organized on June 26 (2026), after residents expressed frustration and anger over the level of response in the previous days.

Barbera said it may be important for survivors to receive vital medical care before being pulled from the rubble.

If not, the buildup of toxins from crushed muscles may cause them to go into shock after being rescued.

After the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, a teenager and his 80-year-old grandmother were found alive after nine days trapped in their destroyed home.

The previous year, a 16-year-old Haitian girl was rescued from the rubble of an earthquake in Port-au-Prince after 15 days.
