Utah Venezuelans celebrate Independence Day while mourning earthquake victims

MURRAY — Venezuelans living in Utah gathered Sunday to celebrate their country’s Independence Day while mourning loved ones lost in the two earthquakes that devastated parts of Venezuela last month.

Members of the Utah Venezuelan Coalition gathered in Murray Park for a day of prayer, reflection and community support as many continue to deal with the aftermath of the June 24 earthquakes.

The group said many attendees knew someone who was affected by the disaster in many ways.

“It includes everything from people who are trapped, people whose bodies have not yet been found, people who have just been found dead or people who have been rescued,” said Gessler Molina, co-founder of the coalition. “There is also the other phase of this crisis, which is people who have lost their homes.”

The gathering came during the weekend on the occasion of Independence Day for both the United States and Venezuela.

“We are sad because everything that is happening, and then you see the reaction of many other organizations here in Venezuela with the government and the regime there, it makes us really angry,” said Mayra Molina, executive director of the Venezuelan Utah Alliance. “We see other people from other countries coming and risking their lives to save our communities. That’s another feeling…to be thankful for that.”

Attendees sang the Venezuelan national anthem, prayed and shared stories about relatives and friends affected by the disaster. They were all wearing white.

“Wearing white is a way of saying that we are pure, that we are together,” Mayra Molina said. “And make sure that highlights those times of uncertainty.”

Mayra Molina described the event as a “hug for Venezuelans” living far from their homeland.

Organizers also expressed frustration with the Venezuelan government’s response to the earthquakes.

“Now more than ever, there needs to be a regime change,” Geisler said.

The coalition is working with other organizations to raise funds and send aid to affected areas in Venezuela. A separate effort in Utah is also raising funds to support earthquake victims in Venezuela.

In addition to disaster relief efforts, the group advocates for temporary protected status for Venezuelans living in the United States. Molina said the scale of the environmental disaster calls for temporary legal protection for those who cannot return home safely.

“We understand that this is temporary, but at least another time frame where they can be here legally protected while the structures return to Venezuela,” she said.

For many Venezuelans in Utah, the hope remains of one day returning to a safer, more stable country.

“We’re kind of anticipating a future where everyone can come back to a brighter country where everyone can work and have that opportunity,” Molina said.
