Faith in Jesus Christ helps Venezuelans after deadly earthquakes – Church News

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Venezuela are turning to their faith in Jesus Christ as they work to recover and rebuild after two deadly earthquakes struck the country on Wednesday, June 24.

Stake President in Caracas Venezuela Fidel Alberto Castillo Gomez wrote to Church News that the earthquakes had a significant impact within the boundaries of his stake. Nearly six buildings collapsed within the boundaries, and several other residential buildings were affected.

But despite the uncertainty faced by many families, members have relied on the Lord by acting “in the faith, wisdom and love of Christ,” President Castillo said.

“During these days, we remember that relying on the Lord does not mean that we will not face trials, but rather it means that we are not alone in them,” the stake president said. “One of the most powerful ways we have felt the Lord is by serving one another.”

Earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 struck the country late on Wednesday evening, June 24. According to Associated Press reports, the death toll had risen to 3,535 by Monday, July 6, with another 16,740 people injured and tens of thousands missing.

In the most affected area of La Guaira, many families were forced to dig and search for their missing loved ones under the rubble on their own, without access to cranes and other large equipment.

According to President Castillo, many families were also frightened by the aftershocks and the possibility of further damage. However, he said, “many members have responded generously, even when they themselves felt fearful or uncertain.”

Committees and support groups were formed to inspect homes, accompany affected families, and coordinate the collection and distribution of emergency supplies.

President Castillo said that the most effective form of assistance currently is to identify specific needs and respond to them in an organized manner.

“There are families who need non-perishable food, drinking water, medicines, personal hygiene supplies and basic support while they are unable to return to their homes,” he said. “Our priority is to act wisely, protect life and serve our neighbor as the Savior would.”

For local church leaders like President Castillo, service included listening to families’ concerns, organizing assistance for those affected, opening church buildings as temporary shelters, identifying urgent needs and coordinating assistance.

“Serving during this experience allowed me to feel peace, to feel the Lord’s company, and to feel that, even in difficult circumstances, He can make us tools in His hands,” he said.

Faith in Jesus Christ has supported President Gomez, and he said he supports others as well.

“Despite everything that happened, I feel that God is aware of His children in Venezuela,” he said. “He knows our burdens, our losses, and our fears. I also know that he will give us the strength we need to move forward. For me, this is truly a miracle.”

Coordinate the delivery of food and medical supplies

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints works in coordination with the Deputy Ministry of Religious Affairs, Worship and other medical authorities of the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela.

According to a June 29 press release in the church’s Spanish-language newsroom, church and government officials delivered medical supplies to five public hospitals in Caracas as part of the latest response. This delivery included ready-to-eat meals, which were scheduled to last for 10 days.

Part of this aid included medicines, intravenous fluids, medical and surgical supplies, and other resources aimed at enhancing hospitals’ capacity to respond to increasing demand.

Service day

On July 1, church members throughout Venezuela also joined the Vice Ministry of Religious Affairs and Worship of the Venezuelan Bolivarian Government to provide service to those affected in La Guaira State.

That service included coordinating needed supplies, such as mattresses, for families in need, according to a press release from the church’s Spanish-language newsroom.

Sheikh Juan F. said: Zorrilla, of the Seventy District, said following Jesus Christ means standing by those who are going through difficult times.

“Our desire is that this assistance represents not only material relief, but also a reminder that God loves his children, and that united, we can bring hope to those who need it most.”

Communications equipment

Another donation from the church to the Deputy Ministry of Religion and Worship will make it easier to communicate and coordinate emergency response in the most affected communities.

The church has donated a modern satellite internet system that will be immediately installed at the La Guaira State Procuratorate’s Emergency Operations Center.

This system will allow the operations center to maintain constant communication, according to a press release on the church’s Spanish-language newsroom website.
