An “unusual” earthquake off Chicago’s North Shore shakes residents – NBC Chicago

An earthquake that struck Chicago’s North Shore on Wednesday has residents worried as more than 170 people reported feeling shake from the quake.

The unusual event occurred at about 2:40 p.m. when a 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck Lake Michigan about 13 miles offshore of Evanston, according to the U.S. Geological Survey of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Experts say another earthquake was reported under the lake near Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin two years ago, although it is not a common event in the area.

It’s also possible that an earthquake like Wednesday’s has not occurred in the past 100 years, according to Northwestern University professor and earth scientist Susan van der Lee. However, because the equipment used to detect earthquakes does not always pick up the lighter force, it is impossible to know for sure.

Advances in earthquake detection equipment now allow scientists to record more earthquakes of smaller magnitude than before, like Wednesday’s quake.

“It is unusual for this to happen there,” Van der Lee said. “In the past two decades, there have probably been little more than a handful of magnitude 2 or 3 earthquakes [have hit] Northern Illinois.”

The earthquake was also unique in that it occurred only five kilometers below the bottom.

Although Van der Lee said they recorded the quake with instruments on Northwestern University’s campus in Evanston and are combining those readings with recordings from a seismometer. Although they are looking forward to learning more about the earthquake, Van der Lee says they don’t worry about it too much.

“There are bigger things to worry about here where we are,” Van der Lee said. “These earthquakes are not much different from the Martian earthquakes that occur on Mars.”

People throughout the Chicago area reported feeling the tremor of an earthquake hit Lake Michigan off the shore of the northern suburbs Wednesday afternoon.

As of Wednesday night, more than 170 people reported feeling a slight tremor in the Chicago area.

A woman named Rachel, who was on the beach in Kenilworth when the quake struck, told NBC Chicago that the water suddenly became “choppy” or just a moment before it was calm again.

One student at Northwestern University in Evanston said they were “really surprised when they heard that Evanston had an earthquake.”

“When I was a student, I witnessed a lot of winter storms, rain and strong winds. The earthquake is sudden and unusual,” Ruixin Zhang told NBC Chicago.
