North shore earthquake? It happened on Wednesday

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed a 2.9 magnitude earthquake occurred Wednesday afternoon about 12 miles off Kenilworth Beach.

The agency reportedly received more than 400 responses to its question “Did you feel it?” A program that collects sources and maps of information about earthquakes. A large number of responses came from Evanston (59), Highland Park (37), Wilmette (16), Skokie (16), and Glencoe (12). Four responses came from Kenilworth residents.

No damage was reported, as is the case with earthquakes of less than magnitude 4, which are measured on the seismometer, according to the USGS. A magnitude 5.3 earthquake is reportedly considered “moderate” and a magnitude 6.3 earthquake is considered “strong”.

Tom Skilling, a famous Chicagoland meteorologist, spoke about this natural phenomenon, saying that the epicenter was 3.1 miles below the surface of Lake Michigan and there were no major fault lines in that area.

“It is likely that the rock output beneath Lake Michigan is still very slowly moving and rebounding in the wake of the removal of ice mass from the last Ice Age,” Skilling wrote in a Facebook post, saying a process he called “isostatic rebound.”

“Because the Earth’s mantle behaves like a liquid, the crust sinks under the enormous weight of the glaciers, eventually ‘bounce back’ over thousands of years once the ice melts,” he wrote.
