The Venezuelan government said that the death toll from the two earthquakes that struck the country last month has risen to 3,889 people, while regional health agencies warn of an increasing risk of disease.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said on Thursday that at least 16,740 people were injured and 17,907 others were displaced.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has warned that people displaced across Venezuela’s northern coast, the area most affected by the earthquakes, are at risk of disease due to limited access to clean water and regular medical care.

“In the coming weeks, the greatest health risks may stem not only from earthquake-related injuries, but also from interruptions to health services, overcrowded conditions, lack of water and sanitation, and reduced access to vaccination and routine health care,” said Jarbas Barbosa, Director of the Pan American Health Organization.

The agency is working with the Venezuelan Ministry of Health to improve access to the vaccine and track any outbreaks of respiratory or gastrointestinal diseases, especially in shelters set up for those who have lost their homes.

The United Nations launched an appeal to raise nearly $300 million to help 1.3 million people in urgent need of aid.

“It is clear in the displacement sites, especially after two weeks, that people are coming because they have not been able to get their other treatments,” Tom Fletcher, a UN relief official, told The Associated Press during a visit to Venezuela.

“So now they’re not just showing up with fractures, they’re showing up with those long-term health needs. It’s important that we’re there for them.”

Doctors treating people in the Catia la Mar community in the northern state of La Guaira on Thursday reported an increase in skin diseases and diarrhea, as well as requests for medications to treat chronic diseases including diabetes and high blood pressure.

The emerging diseases are linked to crowded living spaces and poor water and sanitation conditions, which precede earthquakes in many communities.

Much of the aid on the ground is provided by local groups that have partnered with global humanitarian organizations.

Until recently, NGOs were targets of government repression. When President Delcy Rodriguez served as vice president to former President Nicolas Maduro, NGOs were repeatedly accused of anti-government activities and the local UN human rights office was closed. NGOs now say there has been increased cooperation with government departments since the earthquakes.

“When you have a crisis of this magnitude, people put politics aside and are able to focus on saving as many lives as possible, and that’s what I’m seeing so far in this response,” Fletcher said.
