Nearly 5,000 people are known to have died in the two earthquakes that devastated Venezuela in June, but UN estimates up to 50,000 people may still be missing – with many feared buried under rubble.

Representative Jorge Rodriguez announced on Thursday that the number of confirmed deaths has now risen to 4,930.

The disaster, which occurred about a month ago, affected tens of thousands of other people. Nearly 17,000 people have been infected, and 21,120 people are living in shelters.

Venezuelan teams have been working since the quake, but locals say their response has been slow.

Cynthia Pulido, a Venezuelan who was displaced by the earthquakes, told Al Jazeera: “From the first moment, since the earthquake, there was an immediate response, but from civilians. Earlier this week, a group of 14 Democratic lawmakers in the United States sent a letter urging the White House to ease economic sanctions on Venezuela to aid recovery efforts, according to a report by Spanish newspaper El Pais.

The sanctions “severely hamper urgent relief efforts” and “severely undermine the country’s response and reconstruction efforts,” they wrote.

The United Nations estimates that Venezuela’s recovery efforts could cost the country $37 billion.
