Washington County moderators press again to improve broadband | Sweetened

The Washington County Board of Supervisors questioned assembly member Dan Steak, R Queensbury, Friday during a virtual meeting about broadband internet access in the county.

Fort Edward – There may be as many as 2,000 children in Washington County who do not have access to remote education due to a lack of internet service in Rural Farming County.

That’s what Salem Evra Supervisor Sue Clary calculated and shared with the Washington County Board of Supervisors on Friday.

Because schools use a hybrid model of teaching from both school and home, many towns in Washington County, such as Salem, have little or no broadband access.

“If they are not served, they will not be educated,” said Clary. “Where does that leave them?”

I encouraged all supervisors during the monthly board meeting, which is held virtually, to think outside the box to find ways to remedy this problem.

Dresden City Supervisor Paul Ferguson said Dresden pays more than 50% of Whitehall Central School District taxes and does not have an internet connection.

Ferguson questioned Society member Dan Steak, R Queensbury, who also attended the virtual meeting.

“I think we deserve some emergency services for our children to get internet access,” Ferguson said. “If there is something that you can help me do, I would be very grateful for that.”

Stec said it will continue to push for better access to broadband, but said the problem will not be resolved before schools open in three weeks. Stec agreed that people are relying on broadband now more than ever.
