Flexibility has been recommended with sport managers and coaches as they try to let it play and keep everyone safe.

Opinions abound about who should or should not play. Not sure if there is a correct answer. In NCAA college football, the Big Ten and Pac-12 decided against fall sports, and the NCAA had no say in the decisions. The epidemic has exposed organizations’ weaknesses.

NCAA leadership made comments, such as a statement from Carlos Del Rio of the NCAA’s COVID-19 Advisory Committee: “I feel like Titanic. We have reached the iceberg, trying to make decisions about when the band should play.”

The National Collegiate Athletic Association has made billions of dollars for policing and holding post-season events. They made their money on the back of student-athletes who reaped none of these financial benefits. The organization had the most ancient rules of a petite nature in the name of keeping these student-athletes in class.

Case in point – the NCAA didn’t provide food for their athletes after a match unless they were on a road trip. Division 1 players made millions of dollars for the schools and the NCAA but had to pay for their food after the match. My grandchildren are 7-16 years old and when they are around they eat any and all food available.

The NCAA has been basically calm throughout the pandemic. Now, at prime time, it appears to be a no-show in the decision-making process. They canceled tournaments at all levels, but only after individual conventions made their decisions one by one. The decision from the Power 5 soccer conferences made it clear that they are in power and the organization is without leadership.

The whole play or no play the situation is still without leadership. The Big Ten and Pac-12 saw the pandemic as a multi-billion dollar lawsuit waiting to happen. Big 12 and ACC agreed to the SEC’s decision to play. The SEC is the most powerful soccer conference in the country and will likely try to play soccer whether it’s a pandemic, earthquake, hurricane, hurricane or tsunami – or all of them at the same time.

When the heat was in the kitchen, the NCAA chose to stay downstairs. The only motivation appears to be money.

During this time of indecision, athletes have shown they are ready to form a group and make demands on the NCAA and its member schools. They are ready for a portion of the financial pie.
