Italy: A 4.1-magnitude earthquake hits the province of Isernia, bringing residents to the streets

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded early after midnight on Saturday by the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Pizzone, in the province of Isernia (Moles), at a depth of about 10 km.

The earthquake was felt throughout the province as well as in Chieti, L’Aquila and Caserta. Many people took to the streets out of fear. A second tremor with a magnitude of 2.2 was recorded in the same area at 3:41 a.m., at a depth of 9 kilometers. Isernia Province had already been hit by two 2.5-magnitude earthquakes last January.

No injuries or damage have been reported so far. Speaking to local media (source in Italian), the mayor of Pizzone, Vincenzo Di Cristofano, said: “I am in constant contact with the Regional Civil Protection. Fortunately, from the initial and important examination, no damage to people or property was found. People remained on the streets until late, mainly due to the state of anxiety that developed.”
