Vera File Validation: These photos show an Indonesian volcano, not a Mayon

A Facebook (FB) post on August 18 bearing photos of a volcano spewing massive ash plumes claimed that Mount Mayon in Albay was acting up due to an earthquake in neighboring Masbate County. This is wrong and misleading.

There were no newscasts from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) about any disturbing volcanic activity on Mayon, even after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake shook Masbate at 8:03 a.m. that day.

None of the photos that accompanied the post were actually from Mayon. They were images of the eruption of Mount Sinabung in Indonesia.

The incorrect post was posted by internet user on FB public group Radyo TIMBO-OK, and uploaded a comment in Ilonggo, “After 6.6 earthquake in cataingan masbate, liwat nga nagpa batyag ang mt.mayon volcano ..” and suggested that 6.6 caused earthquake in town Katangan at Masbate in Mayon to be uneasy.

The August 18 Phivolcs Bulletin, published three minutes before the Masbate earthquake, recorded only one rockfall event and a moderate release of “white steam-laden plumes” in a 24-hour observation period. A posting the next day said that no volcanic earthquake from Mayon had been detected, while moderate emission of plumes continued.

A reverse image search also revealed that all four images used in the post were of the Sinabung Mountain eruptions this year, in 2013 and in 2019.

The first photo is an edited version of a photo originally taken during the Sinabung eruption on August 10, and attributed to Agence France-Presse and Muhammad Nurul Asruri of the Center for Investigation and Technological Development of Geological Disasters in Indonesia.

They were overlayed with a color-enhancing filter, and an early version of it can be found at zerohedge.com.

The second image is taken from a tweet on 10 August by volcanologist Dr. Devi Kamil Seyahhabana from the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation of the event itself.

The third photo, showing a landscape of the Sinabung eruption, was taken by European Press Agency photographer Sarianto Simbring on June 9, 2019.

The last photo was taken by Getty Images photographer Ulet Ifansasti when the Indonesian volcano released lava smoke on November 14, 2013.

As of August 28, Mayon volcano remains on Level 1 alert, which Phivolcs has described as “a low level of disturbance”.

The false post received more than 600 shares, and could reach 4,900 Radyo TIMBOOK members. The FB Public Group was created on March 16th.
