The Darfield Memorial was lit green in memory of the earthquake

The Darfield War Memorial will be lit on Thursday and Friday nights to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the September 4 earthquake that struck the area near town.

Sloane County Council joins Christchurch City Council in lighting landmarks green, signifying growth and renewal, as part of the earthquake memorial and the events that followed.

The Darfield War Memorial is the closest major landmark to the Grendale Earthquake Center.

A party was also planned in Darfield to celebrate its 10 year anniversary, but this was unable to proceed due to level 2 restrictions.

In its place, a memorial video featuring Mayor Sam Bruton, a brass band of the New Zealand Army and a student at Darfield High School, will be released tomorrow (Friday 4 September) on the Council’s website, Facebook and YouTube.
