Pawnee is still feeling the effects of a major earthquake 4 years later

Thursday marks four years since the strongest earthquake ever recorded in Oklahoma, and the city of Pawnee is still working to reunify their town.

The city has made progress repairing the damage around the city from the 5.8 magnitude earthquake.

At Pawnee Bill Ranch and Museum, the earthquake damaged every building on the site and renovation work is still underway.

The 110-year-old Pawnee Bell mansion has been undergoing restoration for nearly two years. The workers took new steps but kept every one of the old stones.

“I am delighted to see all the major repair work that has been done,” said Ronnie Brown, Historic Director.

Brown said that wherever repairs were needed, each stone was removed, then carefully returned to their original places.

“It’s very boring,” Brown said. “I think they took every boulder off the walls, put it in rows on the floor and put it back where it was, and it looks like it happened before, except for the cracks.”

To date, the repairs have cost nearly $ 2 million, taking into account insurance and government funding.

Four years ago, stones were strewn across the sidewalk in what was once a downtown Pawnee Bell bank.

The owner of the Signs Agency and headquarters of the photographic group Forgotten Oklahoma have undertaken the restoration of this building.

“I think it’s the coolest building in town,” said Amy Hedges, founder of Forgotten Oklahoma.

Hedges bought it nearly two years ago, while maintaining the original ceiling and flooring.

“This was Pawnee Bill Bank,” Hedges said, “so we just tried to make it feel this old-fashioned, like it was when it was a bank.”

Looking back on that shaky September day, the folks at Pawnee are proud of how far ahead they are, even if it means putting things back together once in a while.

“That was really scary, to be honest,” Hedges said.

Renovations on the farm are expected to take place by next spring and visitors can expect some new exhibits by then as well.

Brown said, “I think Bowie Bell is looking down with great pride.”
