We interviewed one of their advisers, Dave Hepburn, during the pandemic, who gave a very lax account of the lives of young people who were living and in intensive care. A consultant who worked with him called Nick Mason – who is also a photographer – as he began documenting life in their hospital as the pandemic extended critical care unit to the point of rupture. During the rest days and at the end of the shifts he began to compile a remarkable archive, totaling 2,000 images, to capture this unprecedented moment in NHS history – in his own words. Filmmaker Dave Young has met with Nick Mason – and some of the photos taken in the midst of the pandemic – to reflect on the past and what the coming months may bring.
