Mexico: An additional 122,765 people have died during COVID-19 in “ excess deaths ”

Mexico City: Mexico recorded 122,765 more deaths than expected during the pandemic through August, the Ministry of Health said Saturday in a report on excess death rates, indicating that the toll from the Coronavirus in Mexico may be much higher.

Mexico has recorded 67,326 confirmed deaths from the Coronavirus and 629,409 cases of infection, which is the fourth highest death toll in the world due to the virus that has infected more than 26 million people around the world.

The government of Mexico has often said that the true number of people infected is likely to be much higher than confirmed cases due to lower test levels.

In the latest nationwide study of excess death rates, a globally recognized way to determine the impact of the pandemic, Mexico’s Ministry said there were 122,765 more deaths than expected between mid-March and early August.

The death toll from the coronavirus in Mexico at the start of August was just over 47,000, indicating that the number of people dying from the virus may be more than what was originally reported.

Ministry officials said the excess deaths, calculated as higher than the four-year average of deaths nationwide from 2015 to 2018, did not mean they all died from the coronavirus, and may have died from other causes.

But Ricardo Curtis Alcala, Director General of Health Promotion, admitted that the Coronavirus has caused a heavy toll on the Mexican population.

He said: “The new biological agent that is being introduced … from the wild animal kingdom to humans, will always cause an increased burden of disease, as we see very clearly, and an increased burden of deaths.”

“What we want is for this pregnancy to be the least possible,” he added.

On Saturday, the Ministry of Health announced 6,319 new confirmed cases of coronavirus and 475 additional deaths.

Hugo Lopez Gatel, the tsar of the coronavirus in Mexico, said Friday that the steady decline in cases of novel coronavirus has stalled between August 9 and 22.

“This is definitely worrying because we all want this to be less until the epidemic is gone,” he said.
