3.3 magnitude earthquake strikes Leighton Buzzard and Bedfordshire

Residents said their homes were shaking when the earthquake struck the UK on Tuesday.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said a 3.3-foot earthquake struck Leighton Bazard in Bedfordshire and was 10 km deep.

The British Association said the quake struck at 9.45 am.

Earlier, a separate agency reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.9.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said on its website that it had recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9.

But the BGS later reported that the quake was smaller than initially reported elsewhere.

The BGS receives many notifications from the press and the public in this densely populated area. The reports include “Like the transmission of heavy cars driving in front of my door at great speed,” “The house experienced one dramatic jolt,” “It felt like the whole house was shaking” and “It was like a big explosion.”

The BGS said it had received reports from people saying the earthquake looked like a “convoy of HGV trucks going very fast” and a “big explosion”.

Others told BGS that “the house had one dramatic jolt.” Another person said, “It felt like the whole house was shaking.”

Three 999 calls (from Aston Clinton, Cheddington, and Wingrave) reporting a small #earthquake at around 9.45 am, but we haven’t received any calls for actual accidents

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Company said it had received 999 phone calls about the quake but no actual accidents were contacted.

Twitter users in the quake-hit area described how their homes were shaken during the earthquake.

According to the BGS, the largest known earthquake in Britain had a magnitude of 6.1 and occurred near Dogger Bank in the North Sea in 1931.

And she said that an earthquake of magnitude 4 occurs in Britain almost every two years.

A magnitude 5 earthquake occurs every 10 to 20 years.

In 2018, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded near Swansea, Wales.
