Earthquake training is planned for October 15th

WOOD RIVER – The Illinois Emergency Management Agency encourages residents to sign up for and participate in the “Great Central US ShakeOut,” a large-scale earthquake training, in October.

The workouts are set at 10:15 AM. October 15. The goal is to improve preparedness and draw attention to earthquake hazards that exist in Illinois, across the country and around the world.

While it may seem that this area should be more concerned with floods or hurricanes, a major earthquake is considered the worst disaster scenario by local and state emergency planners.

The St. Louis region is near two fault lines, including the New Madrid Fault, which produced the largest earthquakes in the continental United States in 1811-1812. A similar earthquake today would cause “catastrophic damage”.

The area known as American Bottoms, which ranges from Alton south to Monroe County, and a large portion of Saint Charles County between the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, has higher earthquake risks due to flood plains and loose sediments, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, the Lewis Area Seismic Hazard Mapping Project.

According to the website, the St. Louis area has suffered “at least 12 minor seismic damage in the past 205 years”.

It was also noted that due to the geology of the area, earthquakes in this region would affect earthquakes larger than the West Coast of the same magnitude, and that a “large number” of historic buildings built of brick and stone make St. Louis area vulnerable to moderate earthquakes.

Another concern is “liquefaction”, as the soil loses its bearing capacity. This would be most dangerous in the flood plains of the Mississippi, Missouri and Ceramic tiles.
