Venezuelan cemetery expands burial grounds for earthquake victims, many of whom remain unidentified

In the mountains of Venezuela’s La Guaira state, workers dug new trenches in a cemetery to bury hundreds of people killed in two powerful earthquakes nearly two weeks ago, although many of the bodies buried remain unidentified.

CNN observed heavy machinery working at La Esperanza Cemetery on Monday, while personnel in blue protective clothing moved coffins into the ground and prepared additional graves for the bodies.

Satellite images from spatial intelligence firm Vantur show more than 20 rows of freshly dug trenches, each large enough to hold multiple boxes side by side.

A cemetery worker told CNN that the cemetery dug about 500 new burial plots in response to the emergency and reserved an area with about 150 graves for unidentified victims.

Pictures from Reuters show some burial sites marked with small stones. Based on the size of the trenches and these outlines, hundreds of people could be buried there, according to a CNN analysis of the images.

The rows of new graves at La Esperanza reflect the scale of last month’s disaster. The earthquakes killed at least 3,685 people, injured 16,740 others and displaced 17,907 people, according to the latest government figures.

While recovery efforts continue in the affected areas, many families are still waiting for answers about the whereabouts of their loved ones. Tuesday’s tally did not show how many people were still missing.

In the area designated for unidentified victims in the cemetery, each body receives an individual grave separated by plots of land and marked with a symbol to make it easier for families to locate their loved ones in the future, local authorities and community leaders told Reuters.

“They were buried in the designated area so, when the city starts pouring the concrete, every mourner can come and recognize their loved ones,” Nicolas Rivas, a member of the Chaparral Los Pinos community council, told Reuters.

The graves were arranged on terraces marked with letters and marked with white stones to distinguish them from the rest of the cemetery. Ellis Zabala, a community leader in the area, told Reuters that this setup would allow families to visit their loved ones and pay their respects.

“These stands A, B, C, D, F and G have only been used for one week. We can see that they are well organized, and the deceased are being buried in a dignified way that they all deserve,” Zabala said.

Several truckloads of coffins arrived throughout the day Monday, according to a cemetery worker who spoke to CNN. They estimated that at least 80 bodies were transported there during those hours.

CNN saw police officers guarding the entrance to the cemetery and more agents arriving throughout the day as work continued.
