A dazzling tide of neon blue in San Diego, California has filled its beaches with electric aqua colors. During the day the plankton reddens the water, but at dusk they emit a blue glow when the algae impede their movements, such as when the waves fall to the shore. Bioluminescent light shows aren’t uncommon around the world, but the last red tide in San Diego was in 2013 – and it’s not so beautiful every time they grace the oceans.
