4.5 magnitude earthquake hits Southern California – NBC4 Washington

Residents across Southern California were checking their homes and apartments Saturday morning for any damage from a 4.6-magnitude earthquake that struck two miles south of Rosemead and was felt by residents of much of the region, including Orange County.

The US Geological Survey reported that the quake occurred at 11:38 pm on Friday. The famous seismologist, Dr. Lucy Jones, said that the earthquake was at the same site as the 5.9-magnitude Whiter Narrows earthquake in 1987.

Jones said two aftershocks of magnitude 2.1 and 1.6 struck within 10 minutes of the quake.

There is only a 5% chance of a stronger earthquake in the near future, she said.

Los Angeles Fire Department chief Ralph Terrazas tweeted that the department is “in an earthquake situation, with all 106 fire stations checking their areas for damage.”

The ministry said there were no immediate reports of serious injuries or damage to homes or buildings.

The department called on residents to prepare to face aftershocks

“If it is inside when the vibration starts: drop, cover, hold,” management said in a statement. “Protect your head (and) your neck while hiding under solid furniture or near a strong interior wall, away from windows and doorways until the shaking stops.”

Los Angeles International Airport officials said there have been no reports of damage at Los Angeles International Airport, but crews are carefully checking the airport and terminal.

A news photographer near Golden State Road (5) and Garden Grove (22) highway in Santa Anna said the shaking there was “significant”.

The Los Angeles Police Department required residents to call 911 only for emergencies.
