The uprising has been growing to destroy large areas of northern Mozambique. Islamist insurgents who have been loyal to the Islamic State group and the Mozambican army have been accused of atrocities. In one of the region’s latest videos, a group of armed men can be seen killing a naked woman – but where exactly did it happen and who are they? Andrew Harding of the BBC has spoken to Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch researchers as well as open source researchers @il_kanguru (who prefers his identity to be private) to try to establish exactly what happened. The Mozambican army says it does not agree with “the barbaric act that verifies the violation of human rights.” The government has promised to investigate the video, but has also suggested looking at the images.
