Tsunami sirens tested along the coast of Chuck

The tsunami warning sirens will be tested in Christchurch on Sunday at 11 am.

Sirens will beep along the coast between Brooklands and the Taylors Mistake for up to 3 minutes as part of their routine testing.

Rob Orchard, head of civil defense and emergency management at Christchurch City Council, said the warning sirens are usually tested every year at the start and end of DST, but this year the test scheduled for April has not taken place due to the lockdown.

He said, “It was a tough time for many and we didn’t want to create any anxiety or confusion by testing the sirens while closing Level 4.”

“However, we are now at a low alert level, so we will continue with testing scheduled for the weekend.

“People should not be bothered by the sound of sirens and there is no need to evacuate.
