What should be in my disaster preparedness kit? What to pack for emergencies like earthquakes and wildfires

LOS ANGELES (CABC) – From wildfires to earthquakes, Southern California residents have had modern and lively reminders that disaster preparedness is critical.

So how can you make sure you’re ready? Jeff Edelstein, owner of SOS Survival Products, joined ABC7 newscasters Jovana Lara and Phillip Palmer to talk about the items everyone should have in case of an emergency.

Edelstein says the most important items everyone should have in emergency kits include: food, water, sanitation supplies, first aid supplies, personal hygiene items and an extra pair of glasses and personal medication. He also loves to remind people that lighting matters very much.

“Power outages happen more than any other type of disaster, such as lanterns, lamps and batteries,” Edelstein said.

He also says that pre-made tools are not “one size fits all.” You should review the collection and customize it to meet your specific needs.

So where should you keep your emergency kit? First, Edelstein says you need more than one!

You definitely want to make sure your home is ready. “Put the emergency kit in two different places because you don’t know where the damage is,” Edelstein said.

It suggests garage, outdoor shed, locker near front door and your car. It’s also important to have an “under the bed” kit for everyone in the home.

“A little duffel bag or a backpack,” Edelstein said. “With shoes, gloves, a flashlight, a whistle, and an extra pair of glasses.” Another thing to remember is to routinely check your toolkit to ensure it has not expired.

“My biggest recommendation is once a year,” Edelstein said. “Every summer time, go to your emergency supplies.”

And don’t forget your pets!

“Get an emergency kit for them, with extra food, water, treatments and a leash. In case you have to evacuate your home, you can take care of your pet,” Edelstein said.
