It’s emotionally draining to think and write about the pandemic and the political divide and much of California is on fire. It would be a good idea to switch to a less nuisance rather than a threat. Something quiet, melodic, and comforting like earthquakes.

I live in southwest Riverside County and have recently woken up with two good defeats. Most of us with California experience know the exercises. It starts with a slight jolt and then increases in intensity, the lights may swing and could last for a moment or a while. Look familiar? The last few weeks have been very stressful. At the time the earthquakes hit, I got up and said, “Hey, is this your best self?” Then another jerk struck, and I fell silent.

My dog ​​has a better way to deal with earthquakes: to bark at them. I don’t know for sure but I’m pretty sure that’s the reason why earthquakes have stopped. Next time I feel the Earth is moving, I’ll try a deep, ringed bark and see what happens.

Well, it might be an exaggeration to call the earthquake calm and melodic. But, to be honest, my psyche needs a break from the uncertainty and high-stakes catastrophes with imminent fate written all over the place – the consequences can escalate to the end of the world as we know it. I wish I could just be joking, being dramatic. I really wish I could.

I am a healer and not a religious man. I don’t see it as my duty to always be at ease and be able to summarize disasters through positive reframing and refinement. Sometimes therapists shake their head and say, “Yeah, it’s scary and not knowing the future is a challenge.”

I am a positive person, so depression is neither good nor permanent. My mind will race through emergencies and without thinking it tends to land on something hopeful. Something like the hummingbird that I called Henrietta which every morning appeared to the sound of the wind outside my bathroom window.

Many of us do baking, gardening, or feeding birds as a way of affirming life. When I see Henrietta outside my window, my mind slows down and my heart calms down. Not sure why. For me, it can represent normality, the future and hope.

There is a wonderful short story, The Last Paper by American author O. Henry. The story takes place in the early twentieth century, during the outbreak of a pneumonia epidemic. I won’t give up on how it ends, but the narrative has a woman looking out her window every day to see if the leaves on the tree in her yard are still there. Just like I do Henrietta, she feels solace from seeing the leaves.

I wouldn’t be surprised if most of you read this column consciously or subconsciously of a normal occurrence. I think we do this to preserve hope – and that’s a good thing.
