LAFC hosts San Jose in search of continued success – Daily News

In their last four encounters, the LA Football Club has felt very comfortable against San Jose and coach Matthias Almeida’s system in the men’s defense.

Last year, the LAFC (5-5-3, 18 points) outperformed Earthquakes 9-0 in two competitions. Earlier this month, LAFC beat San Jose 5-1.

“The key is to play our football,” said LAFC midfielder Mark Anthony Kay. “When we play our game really well, it makes it difficult for the teams. We have had some success against them in the past, but every game is different and we just have to get into it with the right mindset and get a good start and continue it throughout the game.

In the past five matches against San Jose, dating back to 2018, LAFC has a 20-4 goal advantage.

The teams will meet again Sunday night at Bank of California Stadium (7:30 PM, YouTube TV, Chapter 62).

San Jose (2-6-5) has not been in good shape since the return of the Major League Soccer in August, setting a 0-5-3 record to finish last in the Western Conference with 11 points. In the last two games, San Jose won 11-1 over Portland and Colorado.

“It’s always a fun match,” Kai said of the San Jose clash. “It takes a lot of focus on our part … they can make it difficult for their opponents, but we understand what it takes to succeed against them and hopefully we can do it early (in the match).”

LAFC returned from a 3-0 loss to Seattle on September 18 with a 6–0 win over Vancouver on Wednesday. LAFC scored four goals in the MLS in the first 14 minutes, en route to setting a club record for most goals in a match.

“It was important for us to have a chance,” said Bob Bradley, coach of LAFC. “Something we haven’t enjoyed in a while, and hopefully this is a game that we can build on.

“We still weren’t as sharp as we could be. We’ve gone through long periods in every match where we feel good, but other moments where we hurt ourselves. So, we just have to be more consistent and regain confidence and keep trying to improve in all areas.”
