Two environmental monitoring satellites were launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi Province, north China, Xinhua reported.

The HJ-2A and HJ-2B satellites were launched on September 27 by a Long March-4B carrier missile. These satellites will replace the 12-year-old HJ-1A and HJ-1B.

The satellites have seen significant improvements in data acquisition and technical performance, compared to the older generation of environmental monitoring satellites.

The satellites will be mainly used for disaster prevention and mitigation as well as environmental protection, and will provide strong support for monitoring elements of natural disasters, overall monitoring of land use and supervision of water resources. They will also assist with dynamic monitoring and yield assessment in crop areas and earthquake emergency rescue.

Both satellites are equipped with four payloads, including a 16-meter camera, super-spectrum imaging, infrared camera and atmospheric corrector, and they can provide 16-meter-long, 48-meter super-spectrum and 48-meter-wide infrared image data.

The older generation satellites HJ-1A and HJ-1B, which were launched in 2008, obtained large amounts of remote sensing data during their operations in orbit, and provided important clues in some major natural disasters in China, such as the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. In Sichuan Province in southwest China, the 2010 Yushu earthquake in northwest China’s Qinghai Province, and the 2010 Zhouqu mudslide in Gansu Province, northwest China.

As previously reported, the Ukrainian Earth Remote Sensing Satellite was launched in 2011.
