“We Are Making History Together:” The Orange County School is renamed Hispanic Hall of Famer, a humanitarian school

Orange County, Florida – It’s a moment Sammy Hayman Marrero will forever remember when he saw the name Roberto Clemente in what was officially known as Stonewall Jackson Middle School.

The school, which had a name associated with a Confederate general, was recently renamed after Latin America and the Caribbean Hall of Famer.

“He was Latino, but he was also a global citizen and he was brilliant, brilliant, humane and philanthropist, so I think he really captures the spirit of not only society but of humanity,” said Hayman Marrero, a Hispanic community activist.

Born in Puerto Rico, Clemente played in Major League Baseball in the United States while doing philanthropy in the 1950s and 1960s.

Unfortunately, Clemente was killed in a plane crash while trying to deliver relief supplies in Nicaragua after the 1972 earthquake.

It was his story that prompted Orange County School Board member, Joanna Lopez, to push for change.

So I asked students to provide their input and do some research to get the ball rolling.

“The educational part of this process is what made this change in name so special because not only were the community leaders, and not only the school board members who unanimously decided on the change, but also the students who were actively involved in the process,” Lopez explained. .

Lopez said the majority of students at Roberto Clemente Middle School are Hispanic and 43% are Hispanic in the area.

She hopes this new change will be the beginning of what the future can bring.

“I feel very proud to have a school named after Roberto Clemente. I think we make history and we make history together. This is very important and very important in Orange County Public Schools.”

According to Principal Betzabeth Reussow, signs with the school’s new name have been requested and will be placed both on and off campus.
