Dozens of earthquakes hit a swarm near the Salton Sea area

Westmoreland, California (CABC) – A swarm of small earthquakes struck desert communities near the Salton Sea on Wednesday afternoon.

The earthquakes were concentrated near Westmoreland in the Imperial Valley, southeast of the Salton Sea. That’s roughly 180 to 200 miles southeast of Los Angeles and about 30 miles north of the Mexico border.

By 8 pm, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) had recorded at least 240 earthquakes, the largest of which had reached 4.9 degrees at 5:31 pm.

Seismologist Lucy Jones said the earthquakes are occurring in the Brawley seismic zone, a network of small faults that connects the San Andreas Fault and the Empire.

It said the largest earthquake in the region was 5.8.

She said the area is a common source of swarms and far enough from the San Andreas fault that the possibility of an earthquake near the Los Angeles area is not more likely.
