Seismologist answers readers’ questions about earthquakes in Leighton Lynslade

Families felt their homes shake around 9:30 a.m. on September 22nd as the first quake stunned residents with a force of 3.0.

And just when LBO land began to think three earthquakes in two weeks were impressive, was a fourth smaller tremor reported at 1.39 that afternoon, with a magnitude of 2.1.

“All four events were earthquakes and we used to call the later events earthquakes because they were smaller.

“It is certain that the subsequent earthquakes were the result of the stress changes caused by the first earthquake.”

Other residents wondered if the cause was cracking, drilling holes, or working on HS2.

Richard added: “Fracking could not be the cause because it was nowhere near and there is no reason to believe HS2 has anything to do with earthquakes.”

“I’m afraid I don’t know about pelvic holes.”

The first two earthquakes occurred on September 8 and 13, and measured 3.5 and 2.1 magnitude, respectively. But will there be a fifth?

Richard said: “There is a possibility that there will be more earthquakes of this type. There have been several cases in the UK of very long sequences of small earthquakes. The most recent example of this is the earthquakes in Surrey.

“A lot of the noise from the earthquake is caused by moving buildings. The house shakes and part of the house moves in another direction, making a noise.”

Speaking of the fourth jolt, a resident posted to the LBO Facebook page saying, “I felt it at lunchtime – only this time the windows shook, and the wall wasn’t diminishing much.”

However, the previous tremor (earthquake number three) caused more concern.

Comments on the LBO Facebook page included the following: “I felt my neighbors upstairs had dropped their oven, fridge and washing machines on the kitchen floor right above my head!” And “I was sitting on a park bench and thought someone was sitting next to me, that’s how it was in Linslade.”

Another woman said, “My house shook again and there was a loud bang. Three times in a worrying two weeks.

“There is more to it than we realize.”

These two earthquakes had a depth of 10 kilometers.
