Cape Town is expected to experience another major earthquake

Cape Town was recently hit by earthquakes following the earthquake report issued by the United States Geological Survey

Experts now believe that the earthquake was only the beginning, and the main city can expect another, bigger earthquake

Professor Andre Kejo, Director of the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Pretoria, believes Cape Town could experience another earthquake soon and that one will be big.

According to Keijo, the earthquake will cost the mother city at least 10 billion rand. Although he can’t say exactly when it will happen, he believes the strength of the earthquake will shake Cape Town – literally.

He made conclusions in the wake of recent seismic activity in the city area, which could be an indication of rising tectonic pressures.

According to Business Insider, the Council of Geosciences (CGS) revealed that 80% of seismic events in Mzansi are caused by mining activity.

However, while regions such as the Northwest and Northwest experience seismic events due to the above, the Southwest Cape is an area that may experience some of the highest levels of tectonic-origin seismic activity.

The newspaper quoted Kijko as saying:

“While we cannot say exactly when the earthquake will happen, what we can say is that once an earthquake occurs in a certain area, it will happen again of the same size … It is only a matter of time.”

Kejo added that he is more concerned about Cape Town itself rather than Koeberg – which is well built to withstand a very strong earthquake.

Cape Town recently experienced earthquakes in the wake of an earthquake report from the United States Geological Survey. Several residents including Ward Connellor Angus Mackenzie reported feeling tremors in their areas.
