Richard says she’s been manipulating the earthquake story for years, wonders whether to present it as a thriller or as something more accurate. Fortunately, she chose the latter option, as the earthquake itself occurred almost instantly and Richards spent the rest of the novel exploring Ruby’s life up to this point. “We have this idea in our heads that we will be home with our family and that we will all live together,” says Richardt. “But my daughter is not always with me and my husband is not always with me. So what does that look like when an earthquake happens and you are all in different places? Not only that, but you can’t deal with each other and not know where they are. That’s what was most interesting to me: the idea. We all think we’ll be with the people we care about, but the chances are actually small. “

Ricchart says she’s drawn to the YA genre because she says she has always written stories about teens, from the time she was a teenager to when she was in high school.
