Power outages and ill-thinking evacuation alert systems have left California residents without important information during natural disasters in the past.

But there are some free apps for your phone, numbers to text messages, systems that you can register with, and technology that you can buy that can ensure that you get the most accurate and up-to-date information when a disaster strikes, even during a power outage.

To ensure you better get critical information when you need it most, it is best to choose a variety of disaster preparedness technology options should any given solution fail. The Federal Emergency Management Agency also reminds people that mobile phone networks can be overwhelmed by crises, and receiving information via text messages is often easier than receiving it via a phone call or on an app during those times.

All of these apps are available for iOS on the Apple App Store or Android on the Google Play Store, unless otherwise noted.

Free apps

MyShake: The MyShake app will send ShakeAlert earthquake warnings to registered California residents. The app broadcasts earthquake early warnings from the state’s ShakeAlert System, which uses a network of earthquake detectors to provide seconds of earthquake early warning. Android phone users will receive ShakeAlert warnings regardless of whether they have downloaded the app due to a partnership between Google and the governor’s office for emergency services.

FEMA Mobile: The official Federal Disaster Relief Agency app will allow you to set weather alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations within the United States, which provide information about wildfire hazards, dangerous storms and heat waves. You can also share emergency alerts, create a disaster checklist, and learn preparedness advice. The application is also available in Spanish.

The American Red Cross: The nonprofit provides a number of free emergency alert apps to download, including one comprehensive emergency app and one dedicated to earthquakes. Other apps also include an app called First Aid, which provides information if you need to provide first aid.

Zello: This app can turn your phone into a walkie-talkie, allowing you and anyone else who has the app to communicate via SMS. It can be a useful way to stay in touch with others during an emergency, or to make quick contact with separated family members.

5-0 Radio Police Scanner: You can listen to live police scanners with this free app, including the San Francisco City Police Service and the San Francisco Fire and Medical Emergency Medical Services. Police screening devices can sometimes provide useful information during natural disasters.

County applications

Alameda County: To enroll in the AC County Alert system, download the Everbridge app and search for AC Alert. The system allows you to provide multiple methods of emergency contact and other useful information. You can also register for AC Alert at www.acalert.com.

Santa Clara County: ReadySCC’s free mobile app helps you create your emergency preparedness kit and family emergency preparedness plan, including important emergency contacts and links to resources and information.

Phone and email

You can log your phone and email address to get location alerts with local and federal government sources.

If you text ‘PREPARE’ to 43362, your phone number will be logged for FEMA text alerts and emergency preparedness advice.

Save the number 43362 in your contacts. If you text this number using the word “shelter” and your zip code, you can find open shelters.

County Alerts

For most Bay Area counties, you can subscribe to local government and public safety alerts, including emergency warnings, via Nixle by texting your zip code to 777-888.

You can also fill out the online registration form to receive alerts by phone or email for some Gulf region counties. Search your local county government website for information about registering in the counties of Marin, San Matteo, Santa Clara, Sonoma and Solano.
