Earthquake preparedness exercise on October 15th

(BIVN) – Before this month’s “Great Hawaii ShakeOut”, scientists and companies affiliated with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory wrote about earthquake prediction in this week’s Volcano Watch article:

There will be a magnitude 6 earthquake this week. That’s right – we don’t know where. Probably, at least one magnitude 6 earthquake will occur on the ground in any given week.

There will be a magnitude 7 earthquake in Alaska. It’s true – we don’t know when. Replace Alaska with any square inch on Earth, and this place will experience a magnitude 7 earthquake at some time in the future: it could be tomorrow, next month, or within the next few million years, but no location on Earth is excluded from a devastating earthquake.

There will be an earthquake in Hawaii tomorrow. That’s right – we don’t know its size. In fact, we can get some amounts right – there will be a magnitude 1 earthquake in Hawaii tomorrow. That’s right – it was not detected by anything other than sensitive monitoring equipment, so the prediction is not publicly relevant.

The timing of the largest and most destructive earthquakes is difficult to narrow. We can look at the earthquake record over the past 200 years in Hawaii to understand where large and destructive earthquakes have occurred in the past, but there is no way to reliably predict the occurrence of devastating earthquakes.

Of course, that won’t stop us, humans, from trying anyway. There are many methods, scientific or otherwise, that people use to try to predict the “next big way”. These methods deserve their “Volcano Watch” one day.

Whether we understand the scientific method or believe in predictions, one question comes to mind: What do we do with this information? We prepare. We are preparing.

Earthquake preparedness can happen at any time. It’s true – we don’t need “big” predictions to actually be prepared for a devastating earthquake.

One way that you can train yourself to be prepared for a devastating earthquake is to participate in an earthquake exercise. Last year, more than 42,000 individuals in Hawaii participated in an annual earthquake preparedness exercise called “The Great Hawaii ShakeOut.”

International Check Out Day, which “The Great Hawaii Shakeout” is a part of, is always the third Thursday in October.

ShakeOut date determines the time of earthquake drilling. This year, we’re calling everyone at the Hawaii nei to “Drop, Cover, and Hold!” On Thursday October 15 (10/15), at 10:15 a.m. local time.

Register yourself, family, business or organization as Great Hawaii ShakeOut Participants 2020 on the web at shakeout.org.

During “The Great Hawaii ShakeOut,” the audience is encouraged to practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold on!” As part of earthquake drills. “Drop, snuff, and wait!” It will help reduce the risk of falling or injury during an earthquake in most indoor situations, but not all. The ShakeOut website provides more detailed seismic safety measures for other situations: outdoors, at school or work, at the beach, or while driving a car.

While knowing what to do during an earthquake is important, it is also important to know what to do before and after an earthquake. Did you know that we can greatly reduce earthquake damage with some simple life hacks, using putty or velcro strips to secure items before an earthquake occurs?

After the earthquake has passed, there are other hazards to consider, such as damaged utility lines and the possibility of a tsunami. What facilities must be switched off after a devastating earthquake? How far does Maoka climb (up) to be safe from the tsunami?
