Portland Timbers, San Jose Earthquakes ride winning streaks as they clash on Sunday

The last time the Portland Timbers met San Jose, the Timbers defeated Earthquakes 6–1.

That match started a four-game winning streak that Timbers (8-4-3, 27 pts) still rides. They scored 14 goals at this range, while conceding four.

But when the Earthquakes Team (5-6-5, 20 points) visit Providence Park on Sunday, they will be in turn on a winning streak. San Jose won three straight wins, scoring wins against LAFC, the LA Galaxy and Vancouver to rise to the Western Attaché’s image. Earthquakes beat these competitors 7-2 after losing 6-1 to Timbers and defeating Colorado 5-0.

“San Jose is going to be very competitive,” said Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese. “It will be very difficult. They come from winning a few matches. They regain their confidence. It is a team, you always have to put a lot of energy, work very hard and understand exactly what is going on around it.”

Winning has been what Timbers has been all about lately. Led by Diego Valerie and Jeremy Epobisi, who tied for the top of the team with seven goals each, Timbers set their streak despite the absence of Sebastian Blanco, who lost the season due to an AFC Champions League injury suffered last month in Seattle.

It was a huge turnaround for a club that had only won once in their first six matches after MLS is Back, which the Timbers won in Florida in August.

“After we came back from the bubble, we stayed for a long time, and there was a lot of sacrifice, a lot of work,” Savarese said. “It was natural to get out of it and had some difficulty in the beginning. Despite his team’s winning streak and goals, Savarezi still sees room for improvement at every stage of the game.

He said: “This is the exciting part of the team because I think we still have room to grow despite the very strong performance and we are on a good path.”

Sunday’s match, which is scheduled to kick off without fans at 7 pm (TV on Fox 12 Plus / KPDX), will be the second of five matches in a 16-day period for the Timbers.

“Now we have another challenge,” Savarese said. “The games will come quickly. They will only come in a few days of rest.”

The busy schedule will mean some squad changes for Savarese, who proved successful with such moves at MLS is Back.

However, Savarese doesn’t expect anything to come easy.

“We know MLS,” Savarese said. “Every game is very difficult.”
