Memories still linger 31 years after the Loma Prieta earthquake shook the Bay Area – CBS San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (CBSSF) – It lasted for less than a minute, for 15 seconds in some bay area neighborhoods, but memories of the deadly and devastating 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake linger.

The earthquake killed 63 people, injured nearly 4,000 and caused widespread damage. It also changed the landscape of the Gulf region forever. The Cypress structure went on Interstate 880 on Auckland, Embarcadero and part of the Central Highway.

Last year on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the earthquake, I asked KPIX 5 viewers to recall their memories of that fateful day.

Michael Calhoun was in South Bay, returning home from work at 5:04 pm when the ground began to shake.

He posted on his KPIX 5 Facebook page, “I was at Sunnyvale, driving from my full time job to my part time job.” “I had JUST recently done work on my tires, and while I was driving down Fair Oaks my car started to swerve from side to side. I immediately thought the mechanic forgot to tighten the lug nuts and was about to lose the rear wheels. I drove off to the side of the road. To check. The car was still shaking. “

“I realized it wasn’t my car, but an earthquake,” Calhoun continued. “Go on. I could see the electric poles swinging. Suddenly, a power line fell in front of me. I felt a little scared at that point. I put the car back in and got out of that area. I drove to my work site. I watched the news coverage and saw the cypress frame collapsing. I just started in Dating, who later became my first wife. She was on her way to Oakland to attend a conference. I had no idea where she was when she was struck or what part of Oakland she was going to. It wasn’t until long after that night that I heard from her that she was okay. She was sharing a car and she was in car No. 237. Like me, they thought they had a problem with the tires and stopped to check it.

Becky Gardner Cutler-Schlitter was on the verge of leaving the job.

She wrote, “About to leave the office for today in San Bruno.” “It took a few seconds to realize what was going on and then I vacated the building as soon as it stopped shaking. I remember seeing the windows of the much higher building across the street bow in and out. I was relatively new to the bay area and didn’t even know where the cypress structure was, but I couldn’t believe the destruction Which I finally get to see on TV.After several years, I have been driving regularly on the 880 and crossing the Bay Bridge, often thinking what I would do if another big car collided

Bat Night lived at the time in the East Bay. She huddled with her husband and young granddaughter, hoping the shaking would stop.

She wrote, “I lived in San Leandro and just got home from work.” “My husband and my little granddaughter Jack stood still and kept saying ‘Oh my God’ over and over until he stopped. No electricity for hours. No harm to our home.”

Leslie Fullerton Basis was a student in San Francisco.

She said, “I just got out of the psychiatric building, heading across the street to catch M.” “Being outside in a noisy corner, I felt the earthquake, but not as much as I was inside. The first clue of the severity of it was when Mooney stopped moving. I still don’t know how bad it is until after I walked from SFSU to my home in Diamond Heights and told me … Illiterate “.

Scott Kinkle endured a few moments of embarrassment as he hurriedly ran out into the street.

He said, “I was taking a shower on the second floor of my house, which is built at the top of a mountain.” “The house was shaking like crazy, the shower doors were hitting each other loudly and I felt the whole house sliding down the hill. So, I grabbed the closest thing I was wearing, my wife’s pink robe (not kidding) and ran into the street.”

“It was still shaking and the water was splashing two feet above the pool across the street,” he added. “When it was all over, yeah, it was me, the wet guy in a tiny pink robe in the middle of the street.”

Lorene La Centra-Templeton published that fate saved her from the destruction of the cypress temple.

She wrote, “I was supposed to be on cypress that night.” “I got out of work around 4:15 in Hayward South and headed to Albany (Friends’ House for dinner) but got a call to go to a CPR class in Pleasanton instead … I needed this class on my resume where I was finishing school Pharmacy so I didn’t end up going down Cypress Highway. I think I would have been very close to him or if I had gone to Albany that night. “

Larry Passion was studying inside Fremont’s main library.

He wrote, “(I was) studying before the World Championships upstairs by the window in the new Fremont main library at the time.” “I felt the initial shake and didn’t think of anything. Then for the next few seconds, everyone hid. I went under the table and as soon as the shaking stopped I got up to look outside to feel the whole library swinging side to side. The library was built on rollers. I didn’t realize the effect or the size of the earthquake. I even noticed the collapse of the double-decker bridge in Auckland … and I still remember it to this day. “

It was a candy breeze at a barbecue that you will never forget and the girlfriend she lost that day.

“Grill burgers to watch the World Championships with our neighbors in Concord.” Published. “My husband had left the city early and was already at home (Alhamdulillah). The earthquake struck and when things calmed down we saw in horror the damage it caused. We watch the rescue efforts in town, a house collapsing and on fire. He was a dear friend of us trapped in that house. He died in it. There are no words that express the anguish and helplessness we felt. “

“We forgot the burgers at the barbecue, we forgot the food completely, later around 10:30 pm, our neighbor checks his grill, the burgers are cooked to collect the burning bits, so that to this day we remember the earthquake burgers. The earthquake will forever be remembered to all lives. Lost and heroic deeds, but unfortunately also the memory of the loss of a very dear friend.

De Mallo recalls the fear that gripped her 8-year-old body.

She posted on the KPIX 5 Instagram page “Running downstairs in our Newark home”. “I was jumping off walls along the way! My dad was home off Dumbarton. It took hours for him to get home. I’ve never been afraid in my 8-year-old life.”

Taylor tweeted that a big wave is out from the family gathering.

“I was at home in Santa Clara, and saw a wave of pond water rising above the seven-foot-high fence,” he tweeted. “And somehow the sandwich I was eating was thrown across the room.”

Kaji tweeted about the terrifying moments in the kitchen.

Kaji tweeted, “I was cooking in the kitchen.” “Cabinet doors were opened by shaking, all the dishes slid down and crashed one by one on the floor. All the furniture was dancing, a big TV jumped to the floor. I can’t forget the day in San Francisco. I was lucky to have survived.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
