After 31 years: Remember the Loma Prieta earthquake

San Francisco, California (Crohn) – 31 years ago today, the unimaginable happened.

On October 17, 1989, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck northern California. The Loma Prieta earthquake lasted 15 seconds and claimed 63 lives.

Buildings and structures were badly damaged. Part of the Bay Bridge collapsed and homes were burned. The epicenter was in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and caused an estimated $ 6 billion in losses.

Many remember where exactly they were when the tragedy occurred. Some were about to watch the world championship match between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A.

Since the earthquake, authorities have scrambled to ensure that buildings and bridges in the area will be safer when another major earthquake strikes. Earthquakes happen without warning. The Federal Emergency Agency Mgmt is urging California residents to put together a contingency plan.
