Port-au-Prince, Haiti – It has been 10 years since Haiti was struck by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 300,000 residents and displaced over a million people. The scale of the devastation left the Haitian economy, government, and daily life in an indelible change. Rubble lined the streets for years. The business has not been reopened.

The Red Cross raised nearly a billion dollars for earthquake victims and they built just six small homes. Unfortunately, Haitians have never received updates on where the earthquake money went, how it was spent, or by whom.

“The earthquake gave Haiti a chance to take off and learn to develop. Unfortunately, nothing happened. No planning. No leadership. No project,” says Jean Samson Edward.

“When you need psychological healing first, it is hard to think about development,” says Mary Gerda Nicola, a Haitian American and professor of psychology at the University of Miami.

After the earthquake, temporary asylum centers became permanent homes. And only in October the UN finally pulled out, leaving behind a volatile legacy that included the scandal of violence and sexual assault and the cholera epidemic.

The United Nations Mission in Haiti

The UN mission was originally intended to assist Haiti in political instability and organized crime, but was extended in 2010 following a major earthquake and again after Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

From the reports, the United Nations was responsible for the cholera epidemic they created in the laboratory and were behind many cases of sexual assault and rape across Haiti.

According to Haiti’s Ministry of Justice, United Nations soldiers raped many innocent women and children and then left them with the children.
