Tsunami warning after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Alaska

Sand Point, Alaska (KSEE / KGPE) – A preliminary magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck near Alaska on Monday, triggering a tsunami warning.

The quake struck the northern Pacific Ocean shortly before 1 pm, with its epicenter about 67 miles (118 km) southeast of Sand Point. The community is located about 800 miles (1,288 km) southwest of Anchorage. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 19 miles (30 kilometers).

Rainiel Gardner, secretary at Sand Point at the Aleutians East Borough School, said things were hectic because “this is an evacuation point.”

The district said on Twitter that some schools in the Kenai Boru Peninsula School District are being evacuated to higher ground.

A tsunami warning was issued by the National Tsunami Warning Center, following the earthquake off Sand Point, Alaska.

Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.4, but it was revised down to 7.5. He said that an earthquake of this size in this region is not surprising.

“This is an area where the Pacific Plate is subsiding under the North American Plate. Because of that, the Pacific Plate is actually below the North American Plate, where it is melting,” indicating that this is the reason for the presence of volcanoes in the region. “Therefore, we are exposed to large earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 in that region.”

The National Weather Service has published a tsunami warning for parts of the Alaskan coast, from the Kennedy entrance, 40 miles southwest of Homer, to the Unimac Pass, 80 miles northeast of Unalaska.

Authorities in King Cove, a city located in the Aleutian Islands, issued the following statement to residents:

If you are in this coastal region, go inland to higher ground. Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is either possible or is already occurring. A tsunami is a series of dangerous waves several hours after the initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest. Unalaska officials sent a message that the city is outside the warning area and are not ordering an evacuation at this time. Public safety officials in Unalaska sent a statement earlier Monday saying they would conduct tsunami siren tests in the community.

The quake was felt on a large scale by residents in communities along the southern coast, including Sand Point, Cheney, Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula, the center said. The Alaska Seismological Center said aftershocks of 5.2 magnitude were reported after 11 minutes, nearly centered in the same area.

“It was a good thank you here,” said David Adams, co-director of Marine View Bed and Breakfast at Sandpoint. “We are ok.” He said all the guests were counted and “the structure itself is intact.”

“You could see the water shimmering and sparkling during the earthquake,” he said. “Our truck was rocking a lot.” He didn’t take any photos or video: “It kind of happened all of a sudden.”

Rita Tungul, front desk assistant at the Grand Aleutian Hotel in Unalaska, said she felt some shaking but it wasn’t strong. She said her co-worker hadn’t felt the earthquake at all.

Connie Newton, the owner of Bearfoot Inn, a grocery store, liquor store and boutique hotel in Cold Bay, said the earthquake felt like someone had broken into her building with a truck. However, nothing fell to the ground and was not damaged as it was earthquake resistant in its stores by installing 2 inches (5 cm) around itself on the outside.
