Nigerian security forces have “shot dead at least 12 civilians” as protests escalate – BBC News

Following the news of the killings of civilians, there have been international calls for an end to international violence in Nigeria. Amnesty International’s human rights group says it has received credible and disturbing evidence that Nigerian security forces have shot dead at least 12 people as they took part in a peaceful protest in the country’s city of Lagos. There have been demonstrations against police brutality this week, with protesters denouncing torture by the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squadron – or SARS. The Nigerian president has called for an appeal for calm, and an indefinite limit has been imposed on several regions, including Lagos.
