A 2.2 magnitude earthquake was confirmed in Fishkill

You are not imagining things. If you were in Dutch County on Thursday, October 22nd, you might have felt an earthquake.

At around 12:30 p.m. on October 22, there were reports of Hudson Valley residents in the Stormville, Fishkill, Poughquag and Brewster regions feeling loud and hearing a loud noise.

Then Hudson Valley Weather reported that there was some kind of turbulence on their radar which they called a “small earthquake or sonic explosion”.

Official confirmation finally came from the USGS Earthquake Hazard Program. They reported a 2.2-magnitude earthquake at Merit Park in Fishkill.

Although not the most common, earthquakes have been known to occur in New York. In the past several years, there have been very few people to have felt it in the Hudson Valley. In 2011, there was an earthquake that started in Washington, D.C. and was strong enough to be felt in parts of the canyon.

Back in October of 2019, parts of Rockland County near New York State Thruway felt shaken by a magnitude 1.1 earthquake.

According to the Northeastern State Emergency Federation, the first earthquake in New York was on December 19, 1737. From 1973 through 2016, they recorded more than 550 earthquakes.

There have been 5 earthquakes in the past that caused significant damage, including the magnitude 5.0 earthquake in 2002 in the O sable Forex area.

In the event of an earthquake, you must “fall, cover and wait!” USGS.Gov explains: “If you’re indoors – stay there! Get under a desk or table and hold onto it or go to a hallway or against an interior wall. Stay clear of windows, fireplaces, heavy furniture or appliances.”
