New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has developed a methodology to obtain a better view of the structural integrity of buildings in the aftermath of earthquakes.
The team of scientists developed a Rapid Visual Inspection (RVS) methodology to assess the seismic integrity of seven building topologies.
Pradeep Kumar Ramancharla, a professor at IIIT-H who led the project, told ThePrint that the methodology could be referenced by state governments, banks, insurance companies, etc. to assess “building safety activities” before and after the earthquake.
Federal Education Minister Ramesh Boukharial Nishank took to Twitter on Friday to congratulate the team on developing the methodology.

Building seismic vulnerability assessment
Ramancharla explained that the RVS methodology developed by the team can be used before and after an earthquake to understand the risk to life and determine whether the building can be occupied after an earthquake.
“The RVS methodology can be used prior to an earthquake to assess the condition of constructed buildings, along with the five domains – namely, siting, architectural form, structural system, material condition and construction details – and used to initiate amendments to Indian bylaws and standards.”
Each building can be evaluated in approximately 15-30 minutes with the RVS method. The team of assessors can park in front of the building without entering it or making any technical calculations.
This evaluation method is useful in visualizing potential damage during an earthquake with predicted strength. The professor added that the method relied only on visual observations.
“This RVS methodology can ultimately be referred to as a basic document by various stakeholders to visually examine the building and identify features such as building types, seismic zones, soil conditions, horizontal and vertical irregularities, apparent quality in buildings and short column etc.,” said Ramancharla. Affect the seismic performance of the building. “
The methodology also collects information about building occupancy and the presence of non-structural hazards that can also cause damage during an earthquake.
While the main purpose of the RVS method is to identify buildings potentially vulnerable to strong earthquakes, the results of this methodology can also be used for other purposes, including arranging for earthquake retrofit needs in the community, designing earthquake mitigation programs and planning post-assessment efforts. Earthquake Building Safety.
The team studied the structural strength of about 20,000 buildings in Bhuj, Gujarat, which were hit by a massive earthquake in 2001, and 10,000 buildings in 10 districts in Himachal Pradesh using this methodology.
