When a City Rises – People’s Story: Quake rebuilds the movie now in cinemas

When a City Rises – The story of the people in today’s cinemas detailing the reconstruction since the Christchurch earthquake.

The film is a sequel to “When the City Falls” and documents the last ten turbulent years in the city but also highlights the achievements made during that period.

One of the stars of the film is Mrs. Sue Bageshu, who worked to help young people in the wake of the earthquake.

Film director Gerard Smith spoke to Chris Lynch on Newstalk ZB today.

He said the film process started three or four years ago when he started following certain people and their scores.

“We had about 600 hours of footage to fit into the 90 minutes. We chose the story of Downtown, how you rebuild a central city, and the changing nature of a central city. We really made this story.”

Smith said the central government intervened after the quake and decided to rebuild the city in a certain way.

Unfortunately, this happened at a time when the nature of city centers was changing.

“Because of the shopping malls, we don’t go to the city like we used to. It’s not the central business district anymore, it’s a place people can live in.”

Smith said he didn’t think the story was over yet.

“I think the time has come, and I think the time has come for us to take stock and for the people to come, the little ones.

“We can go back to having a crowded city.”
