The teenager who scored the highest on the high school entrance examination dies in the earthquake

A 17-year-old teenager with the highest score on the country’s national high school entrance examination died a few years ago in the October 30 earthquake that devastated Turkey’s Aegean region.

Arda Baran Demir moved to the western province of Izmir with his family to study in a private school in the city which awarded him a scholarship to obtain the highest marks in TEOG, which is the country’s national high school entrance examination.

Demir had worked as a shepherd to help his family out of school in a village in Chemisezik district in East Tunceli, where he was a successful student at the school.

Demir became a TEOG winner in 2017 after studying day and night to fulfill his dreams.

He and his family moved to Al-Birqali, which witnessed more devastation than other areas of Izmir, after receiving a scholarship in the private school.

Demir was caught in the earthquake at home after he returned from school on the afternoon of October 30th with permission.

And the building in which Demir lived collapsed.

Rescuers arrived at Demir’s body, which was under the rubble on Nov. 1.

Seventeen-year-old Arda Baran Demir from Payamduzu village in Chemishezik, who came first [exam in] Ali Mustafa Celik, head of the Tunceli district, the opposition Republican People’s Party, said in a post on social media, that by answering 119 questions out of 120 correctly in TEOG and making us proud, Turkey lost his life in the Izmir earthquake.

He added, “I wish God’s mercy on Arda, who led us all to deep pain, and my condolences and patience for his family and all his loved ones.”

His mother, Ferai Demir, and his father, Aydin Demir, had a hard time standing up at his funeral in Tunceli.
