Samos’ height is 18-25 cm after a strong earthquake

According to preliminary data from Greek scientists, the Greek island of Samos rose 18-25 cm, after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit the island on Friday.

The earthquake left nearly 300 buildings temporarily uninhabitable or unsafe, and caused a tsunami that flooded the port area, tragically killing two teenagers.

A team of Greek scientists from the Faculty of Geology and Environment of the National University of Athens and Kapodistrian traveled to Samos after the earthquake in order to survey its impact on the island’s topography and buildings.

The team included Professor Efthimis Lykas, Dr. Spyridon Mavoles, Dr. Marilia Jojo and Dr. Ioana Triantafilo with the participation of the seismologist Dr. Gerasimus Papadopoulos.

According to their findings, the island permanently rose 18 to 25 cm in height prior to the earthquake, due to the activity of tectonic plates that caused the earthquake.

The elevation change can be clearly seen in the rocks along the shoreline.

To help victims of the Samos earthquake that devastated the island on Friday, the municipality of Athens has begun gathering long-life food and basic necessities.

The collection point is located at the municipality’s help center on Domoko 2 Street, opposite Lareses train station in central Athens.

Food and merchandise donations will be accepted there daily between the hours of 09:00 and 13:00 until Sunday, November 6.
