A company called Karen Kahramanmaraş Electricity Generation Corp. To build a geothermal power plant in the Orhanlı and Yeniköy regions in the Seferihisar and Menderes regions in the Turkish province of Izmir, overlooking the Aegean Sea, which was recently hit by a strong earthquake.

We spoke with Yaşar Buyruk of Orhanlı Village Nature, Youth and Sports on this issue.

If constructed as planned, the geothermal power plant would threaten not only the endemic olive forests in the area, but also its nature as a whole and the local population who make their livelihoods there, especially from olive cultivation.

Yaşar Buyruk says that a geothermal power plant was established in Kavaklıdere village near Orhanlı and Yeniköy about a year ago. According to Boyeruk, people who used to live and grow olives in the village were forced to migrate due to their annoyance over the resulting noise pollution and the low fertility of their farmland.

As for the Orhanli and Yenikoy power plant project, it is rather new. As part of the project, 14 geothermal exploration columns are planned to open. There is no progress in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, which the company needs to start its project. However, before this process was completed, the company had already commenced operations.

After a 6.9-magnitude earthquake on October 30, which killed 115 people, public interest shifted, facilitating the company’s activities in the area. According to Buyruk, company officials claim to have obtained verbal permission:

“They are trying to realize their destructive project completely illegally by using it as an opportunity the bureaucracy will serve the public in various fields after the earthquake.

“In just 24 hours, they brought the containers to the picnic area of ​​the village and set up a construction site for the workers who will be building the geothermal power plant.”

“As people try to heal the wounds left by the earthquake, they are causing a second earthquake for the people here. This is done in a completely illegal way.”

A criminal complaint against the company

Yaşar Buyruk also notes that, as local citizens, they filed a criminal complaint against the company that started construction without completing the necessary formalities.

“As part of this project, they plan to open 14 poles and they are now digging for this. The company has a license to dig, but it has started construction without obtaining the EIA decision necessary for the construction.

“We have appealed to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Chief Sivrihisar on the grounds that a construction site has been constructed in the picnic area of ​​our village completely illegal and that the construction of exploration corridors for geothermal energy has begun in some 14 districts illegally and without any permits.”

Protest at the construction site

The construction site being set up for the geothermal exploration poles has sparked anger among locals.

People staged a protest at the construction site on November 8, saying that the exploratory columns and the construction site would destroy their livelihood. Entry to the construction site was banned, and local residents demanded that the site in question be removed as soon as possible.

After these protests and protests, Sverihisar municipality teams removed the containers from the construction site.

The geothermal energy to be drilled from a depth of 1000 to 4 thousand meters contains liquid boron, mercury, arsenic, lead, ammonia, antimony, lithium, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and salt chemicals.

Experts are raising concerns about two particularly important risks, if the project is implemented as planned: overheating of moisture in the air and toxic substances emitted into the air and water bodies.
