Emre Saki praises his city, Izmir, after the earthquake

Before Emre Saki goes out to compete for the Iron Team at ISL at Dona Arena, the Turkish swimmer writes Izmir with big black letters on his heart.

After his race – and regardless of the outcome – he turns and sits on the rope lane and makes a heart gesture with his hands in honor of his birth town and where he still lives and trains.

The Izmir region bore the brunt of the earthquake that struck the Aegean coast just over two weeks ago.

At least 115 people were killed, many homes and buildings were destroyed, and parts of Izmir were flooded.

While the Sakji family is safe, the 22-year-old found it extremely difficult to look at him from more than a thousand miles away.

In an interview with Swimming World, Saki explained why the place’s name was written in his heart, saying:

“To support Izmir.

My city is in a very bad condition. It’s really hard for me because I can’t do anything for my city.

“I am here but I keep my focus on the race but it is very bad for Izmir.”

Saki, who lives with his mother Ozlem and the cat Spice, added:

“To be honest, I am mentally tired because I am here from October 11 and miss my city and miss my family, our food and my city in a very bad situation.

“It was very tough – for sure. But I’ll try again in the semi-finals and I’ll try my best again and hopefully I can.”

“Thank God my family is fine now: but it was very bad for Izmir and it is still bad.”

Saki was a consistently top performer, setting records with over 50 and 100 chest hits.

The European 50br silver medal winner for the year 2019 came within 0.04 of the 2009 world record set by Cameron van der Berg of 25.29 in the shorter race and stopped the clock at 55.74 in the 100 meters, and 0.13 outside the South Africa 100 meters mark at 55.74.

Al-Hadid is lining up against Cali Condors, Los Angeles Current and the Toronto Titans in the semi-finals on Sunday and Monday.

Although Sake does not focus on world records but instead he is always looking to improve at his best.

He said:

“I’m just trying to swim in the perfect 50’s boobs. I’m just trying this – not breaking the world record or anything else.

“I’m just trying to beat myself, (I have) a competition with myself.”
