Fears of earthquakes as houses roll across the island – Island Echo

Island residents have taken to social media to voice their concerns about the Isle of Wight earthquake this morning (Thursday) – but an explosion is believed to be behind the loud noise and vibration.

At 10:00 am, homes and businesses across the island heard a loud boom and buildings began to shake for 2-3 seconds, raising fears of an earthquake.

However, it is understood that the earthquake-like experience was caused by a huge explosion on the mainland.

Demolition work is taking place at the Fuli Power Plant across from Solent as part of the district’s redevelopment. The explosive demolition was scheduled to take place around 10:00 this morning, moments before the islanders were to experiment.

It is not clear at this point whether the explosion was intended to be long-range, without warning the islanders.

No damage has been reported yet.
