The stakes will rise on Sunday as top-ranked Sporting Kansas City and Eighth-seeded San Jose Earthquakes walk out in the first round of the Western Conference of the Audi Cup 2020 MLS finalists at Children’s World’s Mercy Park.

The playoff game to win or go home is set to take place at 3 PM Cairo time with national coverage on FS1, FOX Deportes and the FOX Sports app as well as local radio broadcasts on ESPN 94.5 FM and La Grande 1340 AM.

Sunday’s highly anticipated showdown features a pair of teams who finished the regular season in an impressive fashion. Sporting slipped 6-1-1 to finish top of the conference standings for the second time in three seasons, while San Jose finished 6-3-1 at the eighth and final after the season in the West.

As the two sides prepare for their biggest match of the year, we are examining five major events surrounding the competition in the space below.

1. Win or go home

It’s that simple, guys. The 2020 MLS Audi Cup qualifiers will feature exclusive play-offs, hosted by the top-ranked club. If the match is tied after 90 minutes, a full additional 30 minutes will be played. If the parties remain deadlocked, the penalty shoot-out will determine the victor.

This may not necessarily be a bad thing for Sporting. The club has won six of their last seven penalties in singles playoff matches, and goalkeeper Tim Millia boasts a 5-0 penalty shootout throughout his career.

2. Hot in time

Since the start of October, MLS has not achieved any more wins (six), points (19), closures (four), or fewer goals against the average (0.63) of Sporting Kansas City. Coach Peter Vermes’s men made the leap in full in the fall months, finishing fourth in the convention in the last 10 seasons to secure a local advantage in the West.

Melia ran three clean sheets in a row and had a 270-minute finish line in the qualifiers. The defensive line saw strong performances from the likes of Roberto Bonsic, Winston Reed, Andrew Fontas, Jaylene Lindsey, and Amado Dea. The mix of midfield was marked by a mixture of veteran warriors – among them Roger Espinosa, Elle Sanchez and Gadi Kinda – and skilled youngsters like Gianluca Busio, Felipe Hernandez and Cam Duke. 3. Spread the wealth

No team has a more balanced attack than Sporting Kansas City. They are, after all, the only team in MLS to have five players with five or more goals in the regular season. Kinda, Alan Pulido, and Johnny Russell each got six bags each during 2020, while Khiry Shelton and Erik Hurtado added five each. Not to mention the influential contributions of Jersey Fernandez, who scored three goals and three assists this year, or the upside of a player like Daniel Saloy who scored three times in two matches at home in 2018.

Sporting ended their regular season with 1.81 goals per match, the third highest segment in league history. These goals came from a number of different sources, and this approach that relied on scoring goals by a committee could do wonders in the qualifiers.

4. Know the enemy

As the No. 8 ranked in the Western Conference, earthquakes are effectively playing with home money. Few would expect them to go long after the season ends, but sacking coach Matthias Almeida from working hard would be a mistake.

San Jose has gained 14 points from its losing spots this season, including four successive wins. Both totals are the highest in MLS. While scoring the first goal could be a death sentence for some teams, Earthquakes lost only seven out of 13 games, trailing 1-0. San Jose also tops the league with 12 goals after the 75th minute.

Bad news for visitors? San Jose has conceded 51 goals over 23 games in the regular season, five more than any other team for an average of 2.22 per game. Earthquakes blew five or more goals on five separate occasions, the most in a single season in Major League Soccer history despite the short campaign.

Probably the most dangerous men in San Jose are the evergreen striker Chris Wondolovsky – the top scorer in the NFL and has the top seven goals this year – and dynamic winger Christian Espinosa, whose nine assists are one of the NBA tops.

5. The appropriate date

San Jose’s recent projects to Kansas City haven’t been entirely fruitful. Since August 2004, Sporting has gone 13-1-1 in 15 home matches against the COEX in all competitions. San Jose tied 1-7-1 at Children’s Mercy Park, tying 1-1 in the semifinals of the 2017 Lamar Hunt Cup at the US Open, which Sporting won 5-4 on penalties. In the overall series, Sporting is 6-1-2 over the last nine meetings since September 2016.

Sporting has met San Jose twice previously in the MLS Cup qualifiers, losing 3–2 on the road in the 2003 Western Conference Final and winning 3–2 on aggregate in the 2004 Western Conference semi-finals.
