Santa Cruz – Local businesses and organizations are promoting Santa Cruzan’s “local shopping” model this holiday season to support local and small businesses during the pandemic.

The Santa Cruz County Chamber of Commerce is enacting a plan to keep shoppers safe and help local businesses stay afloat in turbulent times. By partnering with trade organizations across Santa Cruz, Capitola, Pajaro Valley, Boulder Creek and Scotts Valley, they are launching the Shop Local Santa Cruz County campaign.

“We’re trying to get people to realize that the retail industry has really suffered in Santa Cruz County,” said Casey Bayer, chief executive of the Santa Cruz County Chamber of Commerce. “Our goal is anything we can do to enhance the survival of this business.”

The Shop Local Santa Cruz County campaign kicks off Monday and will focus on holiday shopping. The campaign promotes online shopping to keep people safe from the pandemic with the ability to support local businesses during the holidays.

It is not the traditional online shopping. Instead of a catalog, shoppers will be provided with a list of local businesses that need support. With a simple click of the mouse, recipients can request a gift card to either receive it, receive it in the mail, or receive it instantly in an email.

It’s never too late to register companies either. Those who want to register a company will need to be able to present gift cards online.

Firms that do not yet have this capacity will be able to do so with ease. The Shop Local Santa Cruz County campaign included instructions from Square to help local businesses quickly set up a link to conduct online transactions.

“A lot of these retail stores come from the stores that you buy and subscribe to,” Bayer said. “They aren’t really geared for 21st century buyers now. The pandemic has got to turn you into a new one.”

Shoppers and companies interested in a Santa Cruz County local shopping campaign can participate on rideoutthewave.org.

The more traditional online shopper will be happy to hear about developing a new company, instock.org. In Stock helps small businesses by placing their inventory online and letting people order products from local stores to be delivered home or set aside for pickup at the sidewalk.

Bayer said: “It’s like a local Amazon.” “In Stock is a program that tries to help companies get their inventory on their website so the inventory is searchable. The founder is a local man.”

However, online shopping is not the only way to do holiday shopping this year. The Stripe Design Markets Group hosts weekly to encourage local artisans.

“In Santa Cruz, the community of local manufacturers is large and thriving. We wanted to introduce our platform to local makers.” Fortunately, we had this outdoor space to accommodate that.

Supporting local manufacturers and small businesses isn’t new to Stripe. Martinet said he has created a space for local creators to display their wares for years. Now, I have taken another step forward with Maker Market.

Shoppers can peruse a variety of items from 11am until 3pm every Saturday. The marketplace outside of Stripe is hosted at Pearl Alley.

“When you can buy something like a wallet or gifts, little things, it’s great to buy from people in your community,” Martinet said. “When you shop locally, you know that there are real people behind the company, and they live in the community. When you shop locally, you help your neighbors.”

Bayer said this isn’t the first time Santa Cruz has gathered to help local businesses when a disaster strikes. Santa Cruz County was the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The earthquake destroyed local businesses, even bringing some to the ground.

In an effort to keep the local community strong and local businesses afloat after the earthquake, the Chamber devised a plan to get affected businesses back on their feet. Similar to the current Pacific Avenue landscapes on Cathcart Street, business was conducted from tents in downtown Santa Cruz.

“I saved Downtown,” said Bayer.

Now, the community is looking for ways to save the local business again when it is in need. Whether it’s through the Shop Local Santa Cruz County campaign or the Maker Market in Stripe, the community has shown its dedication to raising the bar for its neighbors.

“I think it will be a savior for a lot of companies,” Bayer said. “If we did it successfully, I think it would urge people to buy locally more than they normally would. In some cases, it would be a success or disruption for some companies.”
