IBEW Local 827, Verizon Team Teaming Up To Feed The Hungry During Thanksgiving

PATERSON AND UNION CITY, NJ – To preserve their tradition of giving back to the community, IBEW Local 827’s Hudson unit hosted an annual Thanksgiving food campaign throughout the first part of November. With demand for food rising more than ever in food stores, union members have redoubled their efforts and donated to two food stores this year.

On Thursday, more than 12,000 pounds of food were delivered at Father English Food Pantry in Paterson while six pallets of food were delivered to the Brian Stack Food store on Friday.

“In early March, we raised more than $ 5,000 for earthquake victims in Puerto Rico, then the new Corona virus struck and we raised funds to donate thousands of lunches to hospital health care heroes, and here we are now in November helping to feed many others,” IBEW Said business agent Tom Kelly. “We are very fortunate to work in an industry that is doing well during the pandemic and our members feel obligated to help others when they can. Many of them are already donating their time as volunteer EMTs, firefighters, trainers, etc., and now with these tough times, they have taken it to another level. It is a matter of humility to be a part of. ”

Kelly union members oversee work for Verizon to install and repair Phone, Internet, and Data Services (FIOS) in Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties. Kelly also thanked Verizon management for supporting these efforts, and in particular Sean Covey, Verizon Operations Manager for Northern New Jersey, for his help in making the donations successful.

“Our partnership with IBEW not only benefited our communities, but also all stakeholders. The ability to work together to help others has become a calling for both groups,” Covey said. “We are in a unique position during these difficult times to provide assistance and Tom, along with his chief hostess Andy Newman, Pat Glover and his directors in our area and the Local Managers have really made a difference.”

“When you hear about the sheer volume of people using food stores, this is a huge thing and it makes you want to do more,” Covey said, and concluded, “Working with these teams will do just that.”

Kelly shared that the enthusiasm their members had in helping others was nearly overwhelming and that they were already planning what they could do in the future. “I had to tell them to stop and enjoy this moment, and then move on to the next.”

Kelly and Covey were quick to draw attention away from themselves and share their respect for the men and women who run food stores.

“It is an extraordinary heroic effort on their part.” The couple said, “We donate and move on. Those who run the stores have to “constantly think about tomorrow and scramble to find donations for the next day, the day after, and beyond.”
